Rate my profile picture

Your profile picture is often the first thing someone sees. On a dating app, it may be the only thing they look at before they decide. This page explains how to get your profile picture rated and how to pick a strong one.

What makes a good profile picture

Your face should be easy to see. Profile pictures are often shown small, sometimes in a circle, so a photo where you are tiny in the frame can be hard to make out.

Be alone in the photo. A group photo as your first picture makes people guess which one is you.

Good light helps more than anything else. Daylight outdoors is a safe choice.

Look at the camera or close to it. A photo where your eyes are hidden or turned far away can feel distant.

If you are small in the photo, try cropping it so your head and shoulders fill more of the frame.

Test a few options

It is hard to pick your own profile picture. You notice small things nobody else sees, and you may like a photo because of the memory, not how you look in it.

On The Face They See, you upload 3 options. Real people of the opposite gender rank them from best to worst, so you can see which one should go first.

Friends are too nice to help much here. Strangers are more honest, because they only have the photo to go on.

How it works

Upload 3 photos. Your upload goes live after you rank 5 other sets of photos. Results come in over a few days.

You can choose the age range of the people who rank you, and you can add an ethnicity preference if you want to. When your results are ready, you get a results card with a link you can share.

There is no app to download. The site works in your browser.

Before you upload, take dozens of photos and keep the best couple. Photos taken outdoors in daylight usually do better than mirror selfies.

After you have a winner

Use the top photo as your main picture. Then put your other good photos after it. A fun photo that is a bit weaker works fine in the 3rd or 4th spot, where it adds personality without being your first impression.

You can keep testing. Upload a new set later with your winner and 2 new photos to see if anything beats it. Every upload is free forever.

On dating apps, people often like a random photo while scrolling, so try not to judge your profile picture only by likes.

Common questions

Can I use this for social media too?
Yes. The results show which of your photos people found most attractive, which helps for any profile picture, though people rank with dating in mind.
How many photos do I upload?
3 at a time. People rank them from best to worst. You can upload new sets as often as you like for free.
Does paying change my results?
No. Paying only moves you up in line. It costs $10 once or $30 for 5, and it is optional.
