Rate my selfie
Selfies are easy to take, and that is why most of us have so many. The hard part is knowing which one actually looks good. This page covers how to get your selfies rated and how to take better ones.
Why some selfies do not look like you
The front camera on a phone is very close to your face. That can make your nose look bigger and your face look wider. Holding the phone a little farther away helps, and so does having someone else take the photo.
Front cameras also often flip the image, so the selfie may look a little strange to you even when others think it looks fine.
This is why so many people say they do not look like their selfies. Often it is not your face. It is the lens being too close.
Skip the mirror selfie
Mirror selfies are rarely a good look. The phone covers part of your face, and bathroom or bedroom light is usually harsh. If you want a full body photo, ask a friend or use a timer instead.
If you do take a mirror photo, clean the mirror first and pick a room with good light.
Easy ways to take a better selfie
Go outside or stand near a big window. Soft daylight is the easiest light to look good in.
Hold the camera at eye level or a bit above. Try turning your head a little. Try a few expressions, from a small smile to a full one.
Take a lot of them. Dozens is normal. Keep the best couple and delete the rest. A touch up app is fine, but keep it light so you do not look too AI.
Wipe the camera lens before you start. Phones spend a lot of time in pockets, and a smudged lens makes photos look soft and hazy.
How to get your selfies rated
On The Face They See, you upload 3 photos. They can be selfies or photos someone else took. Real people of the opposite gender rank them from best to worst.
Your upload goes live after you rank 5 other sets of photos. Results come in over a few days. You can pick the age range of the people who rank you.
When your results are ready, you see the order and get a results card with a link you can share with friends.
A good test to try
Put your best selfie up against two photos someone else took of you. Many people find that a photo taken by someone else does better, but the only way to know for you is to test it. Every upload is free forever, including your second, third, and every one after that. Paying is only an optional way to skip the wait. You can pay $10 once or $30 for 5 skips, and paying does not change your results.
If your selfie wins, great. If it does not, you still learned something useful for the next time you take photos.
